“Just act normal,” people say to others who, in their view, show abnormal behavior. However, that is sometimes easier said than done, because what exactly is normal? Everyone is a little different, so no one is exactly as the “normal” ideal. The average American does not exist! And yet we all want to be and act more or less normal, and in any case not be found abnormal. Unfortunately, many people struggle with mental disorders, which might make them seem abnormal.
Mental illness can be anything and everything, but illustratively, common (diagnosed) disorders are autism, schizophrenia, ADHD, anxiety and eating disorders. So that’s the “mainstream” abnormal behavior! But some people suffer from conditions that are abnormal even for the group of people with “mental disorders”. We make a list of these conditions here. The ranking is not very important, we do not want to give a value judgment on any condition.
9. Clinical Lycanthropy
Lycanthropy is the name for the supernatural power to change as a human into the form of another animal. Lycanthropia is a form of psychosis, in which the patient sees the truth in an inflected manner, often with the help of hallucinations and delusions. However it develops and degenerates, it can be quite a hindering condition.
Even in ancient times, people already had to deal with it. For example, the Bible describes how Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar suddenly begins to behave like an animal and is cast out of his own civilization. Fortunately, Nebuchadnezzar healed when he recognized that it was God’s grace that made man successful, not Nebuchadnezzar’s reign. So there is still hope!
